West Bengal civic polls: TMC wins 4 municipalities, GJM 3

Kolkata, May 17: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is leading in all seven municipal corporations where elections were held on Sunday in West Bengal, looking set to make major inroads in the four civic bodies in the hills of Darjeeling, a stronghold for years of BJP ally the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).mamata

TMC has retained Pujali and Domkol municipalities, wrested Raigunj and Mirik from Congress and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, and GJM retained Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong boards.

For the first time in three decades, 9-seat Mirik municipality in the Hills has been won by a mainstream party as the TMC won six and three went to GJM. The GJM won 31 seats of Darjeeling’s 32 wards and TMC wrested one, and the Kurseong 20-seat civic board was won by the GJM with 17 seats while TMC bagged 3.
